Here’s A First Look At Netflix’s New Animated Film Ray Gunn

From two-time Academy Award winner Brad Bird comes a first look at his new animated film Ray Gunn.

Set in Metropia, a gigantic city in an alternate future as seen from 1939, we follow private eye Raymond Gunn who finds himself drawn to a case involving aliens, murder, and a multimedia star named Venus Nova. Academy Award winner Sam Rockwell voices Raymond Gunn, while Academy Award nominees Scarlett Johansson and Tom Waits play Venus Nova and Eyera, respectively.

This is a film that has been in Bird’s mind for over 30 years as it blends together “sci-fi and classic detective movies from the '40s.” “There’s a big chunk of people who don’t watch animation. That’s a group I’m anxious to persuade because it’s an amazing art form that is way too limited in people’s minds,” said Bird in a statement, best known for his work on The Incredibles and Ratatouille. “Animation as a medium is too interesting to limit what kind of stories can be told."

“Having the opportunity to collaborate with Brad Bird is a career milestone for me; I have loved his work my entire life,” said Johansson. “I can’t wait for audiences to see this extraordinary animation that looks like nothing else out there.”

Ray Gunn hits Netflix in 2026.
