Would Maia Reficco’s The Last Sunrise Love Interest Pass The Hadestown Test?

Maia Reficco made her Broadway debut as Eurydice opposite Jordan Fisher in Hadestown, the Tony Award-winning musical that reimagines the legendary Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice in a New Orleans-inspired underworld. In the musical, Orpheus journeys to the underworld to save Eurydice, but Hades gives him one condition: He can’t turn around to make sure Eurydice is following him. If he does, she will return to Hadestown forever.

Up next, Reficco stars in The Last Sunrise, which follows a young woman balancing health challenges with an unexpected romance in Majorca. During a press day for The Last Sunrise, Pop Culture Planet’s Kristen Maldonado asked Reficco the ultimate Hadestown question: Would her love interest Julian (Fernando Lindez) have looked back? “What a great question,” Reficco said, immediately delighted by the comparison.

Reflecting on the tragic love story at the center of Hadestown, she believes Julian might ultimately suffer the same fate as Orpheus. “I feel like inherently the Orpheus story is so heartbreaking because he loves her so much he can’t help but look back,” Reficco explained. “Therefore, I do think he probably would and we’d be forever stuck in the same cycle as Orpheus and Eurydice.”

Reficco admitted she hadn’t previously considered the question, but she loved the idea enough to jokingly suggest the obvious solution: “We’ve got to make a second one.”

While another Broadway role isn’t immediately on her schedule, Reficco is down to return to the stage. “I’m going to just make music for a while, but then after that, I’d love to go back to Broadway,” she said. “I would love to.”
