Don’t Let Talking Sheep Fool You, The Sheep Detectives Has Real Heart

Knives Out meets Shaun The Sheep in the new murder mystery The Sheep Detectives. Hugh Jackman plays a shepherd who reads detective novels to his sheep, but, when someone is murdered on their land, the flock must come together to solve it.

It seems the cheesiness of talking sheep may have caused some moviegoers to overlook The Sheep Detectives at first, but this is the kind of movie that is destined to become a family favorite. The film cleverly flips the narrative around sheep, portraying them as a intelligent, deeply connected community rather than simple followers. Hugh Jackman brings a warmth and sincerity to his role as George, while the voice cast, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Bryan Cranston, bring so much personality to the flock. Nicholas Braun goes from clumsy police officer to unexpected hero thanks to the sheep’s help. While the potential suspects could’ve been introduced more strongly, you’ll still have fun piecing clues together. Beneath the silliness, there’s a surprisingly emotional core that explores grief, loss, memory, and what it means to carry someone with you after they’re gone. The winter lamb lore alone will have you sobbing.

You’ll laugh, maybe tear up a little, and have a great time at the theater trying to figure out whodunnit alongside the flock. Some say when sheep pass on, they float up and become fluffy clouds in the sky. Whether that’s true or just a sweet story, one thing’s for sure: The Sheep Detectives is an adventure you won’t want to miss!

The Sheep Detectives is playing in theaters.
