Widow’s Bay Is The Rare Horror-Comedy That’s As Funny As It Is Terrifying
Widow’s Bay stars Matthew Rhys as Mayor Tom Loftis who is determined to turn his island town into the next big tourist destination. Think Cape Cod or Martha’s Vineyard. The only problem? The locals are convinced the island is cursed.
What makes Widow’s Bay work immediately is its offbeat tone. The show blends character-driven comedy with eerie horror, pulling viewers into the strange history of the island and its quirky cast of characters. Tom is a single father who is desperate to put his town on the map and constantly exasperated by his rebellious teenage son. Grizzled fisherman Wyck (Stephen Root) is at odds with Tom due to his fear of the local superstitions, while Patricia (Kate O’Flynn), Tom’s socially awkward right-hand at the mayor’s office, harbors a dark past.
From sea hags to killer clowns, each episode deepens the town’s unsettling mythology. Episode 4 stands out as one of the year’s best as it explores a perspective-shifting party through the eyes of Patricia. The lore and world-building of Widow’s Bay reveal just how deeply the town’s supernatural forces are embedded in everyday life as the past connects back to the present.
The result is a series that’s as funny as it is unsettling, with moments so genuinely scary you can’t help but laugh. Without a doubt, creator Katie Lippold has delivered one of the best new shows of 2026.
Widow’s Bay hits Apple TV+ on April 29.
