Alvina August Reflects On Her Acting Debut In The Other Kingdom and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Memories With Chance Perdomo
Alvina August is ushering in the fall season with Hallmark Channel’s Falling Into Place, but she’s no stranger to the spooky side of television. The actress got her start on Nickelodeon’s The Other Kingdom before stepping into the supernatural world of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
“Oh my goodness. That was my very first… you’ve done your homework. Oh my god,” she told me for Pop Culture Planet about her role as Versitude in The Other Kingdom.
August called the character “an elf tree fairy stick lady,” who was the wicked advisor to the fairy king and queen of Athenia. “It was my first time acting,” she confessed. “I never really came the traditional route. I never did theater school. So that, for me, was learning by trial by fire.”
She looks back on the Nickelodeon set as a safe place to grow in her craft. “That was really interesting and overwhelming and exciting, but it was a soft place to fall,” she said. “An easier place to grow and to learn and make the mistakes that I hopefully don't make anymore now that I've been 10 years in. It was really fun. It was really great. I got to scare little kids.”
With Halloween around the corner August teased maybe she’d dress up as Versitude for the holiday. “Maybe I'll dress up as my character from that and then just open the door when they come for the candy and just be like…” she laughed with her arms up in the form of a roar. While she doesn’t gave the original costume, she’s not ruling out recreating it.
From her very first acting job to one of her most beloved television experiences, August also reflected on her time on Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The actress has nothing but fond memories of the set, particular her time with her late co-star Chance Perdomo. “Chance Perdomo, may his soul rest in peace,” August said, “was one of the most wonderful people that I got to work with.”
She remembered Perdomo’s playful personality. “He was very sneaky,” she recalled. “He’d grab your phone if you were ons et and he’d take photos of himself. And so I still have photos of him on my phone that are just random.”
Beyond the memories of Perdomo, August said that what stands out the most about Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was the atmosphere among the cast. “It really felt like there wasn't that divide on that set,” she said, referring to the separation that can sometimes exist between young performers and the older cast. “It just felt like everyone was so youthful and young and joyous and just having so much fun with all the stuff that we were given.”
August describe the experience as more than just another acting job. “It was just a beautiful set, a beautiful time in my life that I remember,” she added.
