Sarah Drew is pulling double duty this November with roles in Mistletoe Murders and Jimmy. The third season of Mistletoe Murders takes viewers deeper into the world of Emily Lane, a Christmas shop owner with a mysterious past as a hacker. Then she steps into the shoes of legendary gossip columnist Hedda Hopper in the story of Jimmy Stewart’s life. Speaking with Pop Culture Planet’s Kristen Maldonado, Drew spoke about bringing the formidable and “larger-than-life” Hopper to the screen.
It turns out Drew has a solid transatlantic accent she’s been honing for years. “Oh my gosh, it was so much fun. I mean, just put me in one of those hats and that outfit and call it a day ‘cause I loved it,” Drew gushed. “They'll tell you that I have a transatlantic news reporter persona that comes out all the time, even before I did Jimmy. She would come out on set [of Mistletoe Murders] and talk about the scene we're about to shoot. I don't know why.”
“I'm half convinced that's actually Sarah's natural accent and she's putting this whole thing on. She has to make it through the day with this. Just keeping Hedda Hopper at bay inside of her,” laughed her Mistletoe Murders co-star Peter Mooney, with Drew agreeing: "It's very hard to not let Hedda out. She was so fun.”
Drew also praised her Jimmy co-star KJ Apa and reflected on filming the movie in Ireland. “KJ Apa is brilliant in this movie. Absolutely brilliant. We got to shoot in Ireland, which was so beautiful,” she told me. “Peter told me I had to try Guinness in Ireland, and I did, and he was right. It was so good. So delicious.”
She found it refreshing to play a different type of character than we know her for. “Just being in that era, and the movie is really, really moving. I'm definitely a supporting character. I get to pop in and out. And every time I pop in, I create anxiety and stress for Jimmy,” Drew said. “I love playing a character that's not inherently likable. She's larger-than-life and people were scared of her. It was very, very, very fun to jump into that era and get to play on in that playground.”
Catch Drew in Mistletoe Murders season 3 out November 5 on Hallmark Channel and Jimmy in theaters on November 6.
