Harold Perrineau Teases No One Can Be Trusted In FROM Season 4 and Reflects On Romeo + Juliet Legacy

FROM season 4 throws viewers right back into the chaos, as the residents remain trapped in a horror-filled town with no escape. Harold Perrineau spoke with Pop Culture Planet’s Kristen Maldonado about what fans can expect and why this season might be the most unsettling yet.

This show continually leaves us shook and season 4 takes it to the next level. “As each episode came out, I was more and more shocked by what's happening. I don't find out what's happening before anybody else finds out. I find out when I get the script ‘cause I want to feel exactly like you feel like in the audience when you see it for the first time,” said Perrineau about reading the scripts for this season. “Each time I read it, I was more and more like, ‘For real? Wait, wait, wait. Smiley?’ I'm really in awe of John Griffin and what he's writing. I like to stay on the edge because I think that the audience can feel that the character is on the edge along with him and that feels like a fun ride to be on.”

Season 4 makes one thing clear: trust no one. “Here's the thing that I think is the most chaotic about the whole season. I think it's in some of the advertising where it's saying that ‘You can trust no one’ and that is really, really true. I mean, there is not a single character that you can trust or the characters can trust, including themselves. It is so tricky. When you see the stuff with The Man In The Yellow, you'll know what I mean,” said Perrineau. “What he's doing in that play is causing so much chaos for everyone that you don't know what or where anything is coming from. It makes everything just uneasy. The whole season [is] just uneasy because you're always a little like, ‘But wait, what's going to happen next? When's the shoe going to drop? And it usually drops pretty quick.’ Yeah, it's pretty scary.”

Will we finally find out what FROM actually means? “No. That I can answer. Not yet. I still don't know what it means. I'm still asking the question,” laughed Perrineau. We won't find that out, but hopefully it's coming soon. You know what I mean? But we are going to get a lot more answers. And, of course, those answers are going to lead to a lot more questions. That's the fun part of the journey. I don't want all the answers ‘cause I don't want it to end. Because when we get all the answers, well, that's it, folks! Do you know what I mean? So I want to stay on this journey as long as I can.” Luckily the show has been picked up for a fifth and final season that will answers all of our burning questions.

Outside of FROM, this year also marks 30 years since Perrineau played Mercutio in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet. “Oh wow. Is it? Oh right. ‘96. Oh snap,” he said. “Hey, look, Romeo + Juliet was epic and Baz Luhrmann is an epic director. When we shot it, we all knew like, ‘Oh, wow. This is wild and special and really great.’ Then when it came out and all the critics were like, ‘Nah, boo boo.’ We were like, ‘Oh, stop. They just killed us.’ But what was really great is that everybody younger than 40 was like, ‘Yo, this is amazing.’ So they showed it to their kids and their kids were like, ‘What?’ It's come along like year after year after year with more people who really, really appreciate it. To be part of that feels really special for me. As I meet more people who are in ninth grade and they're like, ‘I just saw you in Romeo + Juliet,’ I'm still really appreciative of it.”

FROM season 4 premieres April 19 on MGM+.
