Laura Marano Pitches A Lizzie McGuire Movie-Inspired Austin & Ally Reunion!

As the 15th anniversary of Austin & Ally approaches, Laura Marano is totally down to return to the Disney Channel role that shot her to stardom. In a conversation with Pop Culture Planet’s Kristen Maldonado for her new film Above & Below, Marano shared her vision for a Lizzie McGuire Movie-inspired reunion.

“Of course,” she said when asked if she would consider reprising Ally Dawson. “I think we’ve all said that we would be down for it if it made sense plot-wise.”

The original cast and creative team still mean so much to her. “I love everyone who is a part of that project,” she said. “At the end of the day, any of these reboots really is a love letter to fans first and foremost. You just want to make sure that you're doing that right.”

Taking inspiration from The Lizzie McGuire Movie, Marano knows exactly what kind of reunion she would want, pitching a trip to Europe or Hawaii. “I think The Lizzie McGuire Movie did it so right and that’s the model I always want to follow,” she said.

There’s still plenty of Austin and Ally’s story left to explore. “We never saw Austin and Ally tour together. We heard about it. We never saw their engagement story. We never saw their wedding. We saw a lot after,” Marano said. “That's what I think is also a little bit unique about our show is our finale fast forwards into 15 years in the future. So it is a very much like, okay, how do we fill in the gaps of what the audience knows happens and what they don't see happen.”

Austin & Ally is streaming on Disney+, while Marano’s shark thriller Above & Below hits VOD on August 25.
